Released in 1979, this masterpiece is by the Art Ensemble of Chicago, one of the foremost groups in free and experimental jazz. Known for their primal approach to free jazz and extensive use of African traditional percussion, the ensemble presents the very essence of its distinctive sound on this album. The undeniable highlight is A1. Beginning with a deeply spiritual introduction that seems enveloped in thick clouds of smoke, it develops into superb Afro-jazz with a peaceful sound that brings together Nyabinghi rhythms and New Orleans jazz. A3 is equally spiritual, unfolding into an Afro-ethnic soundscape in which an array of small percussion instruments floats gently through the space. Original German pressing with insert.
