Art Ensemble of Chicago, a Chicago-based group consisting of Lester Bowie, Joseph Jarman, Roscoe Mitchell, and Malachi Favors, who developed free/experimental jazz rooted in African traditional music, released this album in 1969 as part of the renowned <Actuel> series on France’s BYG Records. The recordings were made at Pierre Barouh’s Studio Saravah in Paris on the same day as their album Message to Our Folks, also released that year. Unlike the more theatrical A Jackson in Your House, this masterpiece vividly conveys the Black American spirit through lead instruments and an abundance of percussion. This is the 1978 UK reissue.
