Released in 1976, this was the second album by New York-born composer and keyboardist Art Lande, who went on to leave behind numerous recordings for ECM. The quartet features Mark Isham on saxophone and trumpet, Bill Douglass on bass and flute, and Glenn Cronkhite on drums and percussion. A1, composed by Isham and based on traditional Chinese music, is an extended piece that opens with a flute solo evoking a vast, open wilderness before gradually drawing the listener into a deeply spiritual realm. As with so many ECM recordings, the sound is exceptionally transparent, with each note arriving almost like finely dispersed particles in the air. A beautiful album in which one can simply surrender to the purity and detail of the sound.
