Art Lande, a composer and keyboardist from New York with numerous works under ECM, released his second album in 1976. This album features a quartet lineup with Mark Isham (saxophone, trumpet), Bill Douglass (bass, flute), and Glenn Cronkhite (drums, percussion). The track A1, composed by Mark Isham and based on traditional Chinese music, begins with an evocative flute solo that conjures images of vast wilderness before evolving into a spiritual journey on this extended piece. Like most ECM works, it boasts an exceptional level of clarity, with sounds that feel like finely textured particles enveloping the listener. This remarkable album was re-released in Japan in 1985 as part of Polydor’s ECM The Highest Quality series. Featuring direct digital mastering from the original masters and pressed on high-quality, heavy vinyl, this version offers a unique high-fidelity experience distinct from the original German pressings.
