A leader album released in 1979 by the American saxophonist Arthur Blythe, who debuted after joining the Underground Musicians and Artists Association founded by Horace Tapscott in the mid-1960s. Blythe went on to contribute to various groups, including those led by Chico Hamilton, Gil Evans, Jack DeJohnette, McCoy Tyner, and others. In this album, titled as such, Blythe collaborates with Stanley Cowell (p), Fred Hopkins (b), and Steve McCall (ds) in a quartet, presenting renditions of classic and traditional jazz tunes. Musicians who pioneered avant-garde jazz since the 1960s often bring a more spiritual dimension to standard numbers, and this album is no exception. From the opening track 'Jitterbug' to Duke Ellington's 'Caravan' and John Coltrane's 'Naima,' the album is full of captivating moments. Stanley Cowell's piano work is also outstanding.
