This 1961 album by the quintet led by Astor Piazzolla, Argentina’s legendary bandoneon player who revolutionized the world of tango, captures a fascinating chapter in his musical evolution. Having established a new form of tango in the 1950s through arrangements rich in dissonance, syncopation, and improvisational elements, Piazzolla here takes a step back toward the traditional style following a period of artistic struggle. Performed by a quintet of bandoneon, violin, piano, double bass, and guitar, the album also features four vocal tracks by Nelly Vazquez. The guitarist is Oscar López Ruiz, brother of Jorge López Ruiz. Highlights include A1, one of Piazzolla’s earliest compositions; A2, a refined arrangement of a tango classic written by Juan de Dios Filiberto; A3, showcasing Nelly Vazquez’s captivating and seductive vocals; and B1, where Piazzolla’s brilliant sensibility shines through in his innovative use of electric guitar to elevate traditional tango themes. A superb performance throughout, exemplifying Piazzolla’s unmatched artistry and imagination. This is a Japanese pressing in 1978.
