Barre Phillips, a leading free jazz/avant-garde bassist who has been active since the 1960s and has demonstrated his exceptional talent in numerous sessions, was joined by John Surman on lead and Aina Kemanis on vocals, and released this album from ECM in 1979. The unison of Philips' fantastical bass, which makes extensive use of arco techniques, Surman's sax/clarinet, and Kemanis' vocals is so wonderful that this album surpasses even contemporary music. As soon as you drop the needle, the atmosphere of the soundstage changes instantly.
