Released in 1981, this album is by Barre Phillips, one of the leading bassists in avant-garde and free jazz. As on his 1979 ECM masterpiece Journal Violone II, the album features John Surman on soprano and baritone saxophones and bass clarinet, together with Aina Kemanis on voice. They are joined here by Hervé Bourde on alto and tenor saxophones and flute, Pierre Favre on drums and percussion, and Claudia Favre on voice, forming an unusual piano-less quartet augmented by two vocalists. Pierre Favre’s explosive, almost transcendent drumming is particularly striking. Although the music is decidedly free in conception, the high-register soprano voices of Kemanis and Claudia Favre—singing with a birdlike, almost chirping quality—are absolutely beautiful and add enormously to the album’s distinctive character. Original German pressing.
