A hard to find and fascinating album, issued in 1988, featuring works by Karlheinz Stockhausen performed by German pianist Bernhard Wambach—a student of Konrad Meister, Peter-Jürgen Hofer, and Friedrich Gulda—together with percussionists Micea Ardeleanu and Fred Rensch. Wambach, an active performer across Europe, Israel, Japan, and China, brings exceptional clarity and precision to these demanding scores.
The program includes three Stockhausen compositions, all originally written in 1959: “Kontakte” for electronic sounds, piano, and percussion; “Refrain” for three instruments; and “Zyklus” for solo percussion. The A-side is dedicated entirely to a complete 34’45” performance of “Kontakte,” while side B features “Refrain” and the first version of “Zyklus.”
All performances are superbly executed, with the kind of finely detailed sound quality one expects from a German production of this era. A remarkable and uncommon document.
