This is a reissue from 1987 of the album "The Tenor Stylings of Bill Barron," originally released in 1961 on Savoy Records. Bill Barron, an American saxophonist who gained prominence in the late 1950s playing with groups such as Cecil Taylor, Philly Joe Jones, and Charles Mingus, leads the album. The quintet lineup includes Kenny Barron on piano, Ted Curson on trumpet, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Frankie Dunlp on drums. This album marks Kenny Barron's debut recording. While it includes typical hard bop in a 4-beat style, the standout tracks are A2 and B1, which showcase a post-bop style with an exotic atmosphere, incorporating modes and pentatonic scales. These tracks precede the innovative work of John Coltrane from the same era, making them particularly noteworthy. Highly recommended.
A2: Ode to an Earth Girl
B1: Oriental Impressions
