A live recording left by the legendary trio of Bill Evans, Scott LaFaro, and Paul Motian at New York’s Village Vanguard in 1961. Drawn from the same day of performances as Sunday At The Village Vanguard, this is one of Evans’ definitive Riverside-era masterpieces, a record that profoundly reshaped the possibilities of the piano trio format. From the delicate touch and gently wavering lyricism heard on the title track, to the quiet intimacy of “My Foolish Heart,” and “Milestones,” the Miles Davis classic where LaFaro’s bass enters the conversation almost like a melodic instrument, the performance captures all three musicians breathing together with the same extraordinary density. It still radiates a very special brilliance. Even the sounds of glasses and the presence of the audience seem to dissolve into the music itself, preserving the atmosphere of the club as part of the recording. Japanese pressing released in 1975 as part of Victor’s Riverside Original Recording series. Obi / insert missing.
