Originally released on Strata-East in 1973, this extraordinary album is by American saxophonist Billy Harper, who performed with the Gil Evans Jazz Orchestra and worked in groups led by such great musicians as Art Blakey, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, and Lee Morgan. He also delivered outstanding performances on celebrated rare-groove classics by artists including Leon Thomas and Bobbi Humphrey. The remarkable cast includes Elvin Jones on drums, George Cables on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, Julian Priester and Dick Griffin on trombone, Billy Cobham and Warren Smith on drums, and Jimmy Owens on trumpet. Throughout this historic masterpiece, richly textured ensembles deliver deeply soulful performances, while gospel-like choruses featuring four singers heighten the emotional intensity of its Black spiritual jazz sound. The two tracks on side B are especially moving. Very, very highly recommended. This is the Japanese pressing released by Nippon Columbia in 1983.
