Inspired by Erik Satie’s concept of “furniture music,” Brian Eno coined the idea of “ambient music,” defining music as a form of environment within urban life. This album brings together pieces he recorded between 1975 and 1976. As the title suggests, several of the tracks were originally conceived for use in film soundtracks, and the album contains 18 fragmentary pieces in total, ranging from soft, chamber music-like textures to electronics that connect directly with the sound world of his collaborators Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius. Needless to say, the ambiance throughout is absolutely superb. A1/B7 were also unofficially sampled by the Italian underground experimental wave group Magazzini Criminali, which we featured in our guidebook obscure sound.
