An album released in 1974 on the revered Black Jazz Records by American guitarist Calvin Keys, who also collaborated with the likes of Joe Henderson, Pharoah Sanders, and Bobby Hutcherson. The lineup is formidable: Charles Owens (ss, ts, fl), Kirk Lightsey (electric piano), Henry Franklin (b), Owen Marshall (per), Oscar Brashear (tp, flh), Ndugu Chancler (ds), and Al Hall Jr. (tb, bs). Highlights include Track 1, where Owens’ floating flute lines and Lightsey’s crisp, buoyant electric piano dance effortlessly, and Track 4, driven by a low-slung funk beat that hits deep. Throughout, the album delivers a powerful strain of Black spiritual jazz with a strong organic sensibility—rich, grounded, and deeply soulful. This is the 2005 CD reissue of a genuine classic.
