A 1977 album by American pianist and composer Carla Bley, who co-founded the Jazz Composers Orchestra Association with her husband Michael Mantler and made a major contribution to the jazz world through efforts to support and protect musicians from commercial pressures. The album features an impressive cast including Michael Mantler, Bob Stewart, Richard Tee, Eric Gale, and Steve Gadd. As the title suggests, the record is filled with warm, relaxed jazz perfectly suited to dinner time, drawing on swing, bop, ragtime, blues, and other classic styles. The real standout, however, is A4: a superb urban jazz tune built around gently swaying horns and moist, fluid guitar tones, over which Bley’s whispery, languid vocals drift with effortless cool. An absolutely fantastic track.
