A three-LP box set released in 1971 by American pianist Carla Bley and Canadian poet Paul Haines. Conceived over five years and recorded over a further three, this ambitious jazz-rock opera brings together musicians and singers from a remarkably diverse range of backgrounds, including Don Cherry, Gato Barbieri, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, Mike Mantler, Jack Bruce, Karl Berger, and Linda Ronstadt. Music of the 1930s, folk, country, psychedelic rock, Indian music, and electronics all collide in a dizzying cauldron of sound, resulting in a wildly chaotic work. Jazz’s answer to Pink Floyd, perhaps? A truly rewarding listen. German pressing manufactured and distributed by ECM, issued in or after 1977.
