A 1987 album by Mississippi-born singer Cassandra Wilson, an extraordinary vocalist who later received major recognition in the American jazz world, including Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Performance in 1996 and Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2009. Co-produced with saxophonist Steve Coleman, who also appeared on Dave Holland Trio’s 1988 ECM album Triplicate. Highlights include A1, distinguished by a synthesizer tone reminiscent of steel pan, and A5, which opens with Wilson’s scat vocals. Throughout the album, sophisticated arrangements and performances blend seamlessly with Wilson’s magical voice. Particularly recommended are A4, with its superb urban and emotionally charged groove, and B1, a breezy, uplifting track driven by an infectious Latin feel. A masterpiece from start to finish.
The shrink wrap was opened at our store solely to check the condition. There are some faint paper scuffs on parts of the vinyl caused by the paper inner sleeve, but they have no effect on playback.
