This is the leader album released in 1977 by Cecil McBee, who is the American bassist who, after moving to New York in the 1960s, became a dominant presence on countless different sessions, as well as playing with Miles Davis, Andrew Hill, Sam Rivers, Wayne Shorter and many others. The sextet includes Chico Freeman (ss,ts), Joe Gardner (tp), Dennis Moorman (p), Steve McCall (ds) and Famoudou Don Moye (per). A1 opens with Moye's supremely primitive Afro-percussion, which develops groovily with an Afro-Cuban feel. B1 has an introduction with McBee's double bass playing melody against a jungle percussion sound reminiscent of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, before moving into a side-swinging mystic spiritual jazz. It is a masterpiece with a wonderful worldview, similar to that of his classic album Mutima.
