Released in 1985 under the name Cecil Taylor Segments II, this album is by American jazz pianist Cecil Taylor, who possessed a deep knowledge of classical and contemporary music—including composers such as Bartók and Stockhausen—while pursuing an intensely physical mode of expression. The eleven-piece jazz orchestra features Enrico Rava, Tomasz Stańko, Frank Wright, John Tchicai, Gunter Hampel, Rashied Bakr, and others. Built from densely layered rhythms and improvisation, the album is a powerful work of free jazz imbued throughout with a vision that reaches back toward African roots. B1 is especially outstanding, overflowing with an extremely primitive and vital energy that also resonates with the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
