Charles Tolliver is an American trumpeter who was active in the New York jazz scene in the 1960s, including playing on Jackie McLean's Blue Note recordings, and who founded the Strata-East label in 1971 with Stanley Cowell, with whom he played in the Max Roach group. The album was released in 1973 by his group Music Inc. and features Stanley Cowell (p), Cecil McBee (b), and Jimmy Hopps (ds), the iconic lineup of Strata-East. This is a live performance at Slugs' in New York City in 1970. This is a great record, more straightforward in approach than the spearhead free jazz of the same era, but so groovy that you can't help but sway your body, and you are completely carried away by the white-hot performance.
