Released in 1983, this album is by jazz bassist Charlie Haden, whose exceptional playing can be heard through his work with Ornette Coleman’s group and in collaborations with Don Cherry and countless other artists. A large-scale jazz-orchestra work featuring many of Haden’s longtime associates, including Carla Bley, Don Cherry, Michael Mantler, and Dewey Redman. The big-band arrangements draw upon Spanish musical traditions such as tango and flamenco, creating a truly magnificent sound. Highlights include the title track A2, whose deeply nostalgic, gypsy-inflected atmosphere resonates straight to the heart, and B2, where a sense of melancholy fills the space even as the music unfolds freely. Charlie Haden’s bass solo in the latter half of B2 is profoundly spiritual. Original German pressing.
