Released on ECM in 1983, this album was recorded by saxophonist Charlie Mariano, who created numerous works reflecting his deep engagement with Indian and other Eastern musical traditions, together with the Indian percussion ensemble the Karnataka College of Percussion, with whom he had developed a close relationship through his collaborations with Embryo. Within an extraordinarily deep and expansive sonic space, tabla and tambura resonate high into the air, while Mariano’s clear, fluid saxophone and flute tones intertwine with chants by R. A. Ramamani. A masterpiece of ethnic jazz in which the profound traditions of Indian classical music merge organically with adventurous jazz. Original German pressing.
