Chick Corea
Piano Improvisations Vol. 2
ECM Records (Germany) 1972
ECM 1020 ST (LP) Original pressing. Coated sleeve.
sleeve : EX-(color-faded.)
media : EX-/EX-(some slightly noise and light click noise.)
Discovered by Miles Davis and featured on landmark recordings such as In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, and On the Corner, jazz pianist Chick Corea—who also ignited the fusion boom with his 1972 leader album Return to Forever—released this record in 1972 as his second album for ECM Records. As its title suggests, the album is a solo piano work composed entirely of free improvisations. Covering pieces like Wayne Shorter’s “Masqualero” and Thelonious Monk’s “Trinkle Tinkle”, Corea expands upon their imagery through spontaneous development, resulting in a deeply spiritual and emotional performance that—like Vol. 1—vividly reflects his religious and philosophical outlook. Especially on side B, track 3, Corea’s piano reaches transcendent heights, as if expressing the entirety of the natural cosmos—an absolutely breathtaking moment. This is the original German pressing, without spine lettering or “MADE IN GERMANY” marking.
A1: After Noon Song
B3: Departure from Planet Earth
