Discovered by Miles Davis and featured on such landmark recordings as In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, and On the Corner, jazz pianist Chick Corea ignited a major fusion movement with his 1972 leader album Return to Forever. This record, released the same year as his second ECM album, marks a striking contrast — a solo piano work composed entirely of free improvisations. As the title suggests, Corea explores spontaneous creation throughout, expanding upon the imagery of pieces like Wayne Shorter’s “Masqualero” and Thelonious Monk’s “Trinkle Tinkle” through deep, intuitive improvisation. Much like Vol. 1, the performances vividly reflect Corea’s spiritual and philosophical vision, resulting in a profoundly emotional and introspective masterpiece. The soaring, explosive piano lines on B3, evoking the essence of nature and the universe itself, are especially breathtaking. Original German pressing — no spine text, no “MADE IN GERMANY” marking.
