A 1964 album by Chico Hamilton, one of America’s foremost jazz drummers, who made his mark performing with the groups of Lester Young, Gerry Mulligan, and Count Basie, while also recording outstanding works under his own name that evolved with the times—from cool jazz to mellow fusion. Only the title track (A1) is performed by a sextet featuring Jimmy Woods (ts), Charles Lloyd (fl), Gábor Szabó (g), Albert Stinson (b), and Willie Bobo (perc). The remaining tracks are recorded by an octet with John Anderson (tp), Lou Blackburn (tb), Harold Land (ts), Henry Sigismonti (fh), Bill Green (fl), Gábor Szabó (g), and Albert Stinson (b). Highlights include A2, with its finely detailed Latin beat and horn ensemble built on repeating, simple phrases, and A4, where Szabó’s clean-toned guitar and Stinson’s bass evoke a mystical atmosphere. A superb album filled with standout performances. Original U.S. pressing.
