Released as the second installment in the Super Session series, this album brings together Dutch jazz flutist Chris Hinze—known for his many beautiful and deeply immersive works ranging from ethnically inspired new-age jazz to meditative music—and masters of traditional Japanese music. Here, Hinze collaborates with shakuhachi player Hozan Yamamoto, who helped carry traditional Japanese music into a new era, and seventeen-string koto player Tadao Sawai. Hinze’s flute playing is extraordinarily powerful. His tone and phrasing possess such a profound Eastern spirituality that the instrument almost sounds like a traditional Japanese instrument itself. The album also features numerous passages of free improvisation, and the breathtaking interplay among the three musicians is truly remarkable.
