A 2005 CD album by the Norwegian group Christian Wallumrød Ensemble, led by pianist Christian Wallumrød and featuring longtime collaborators such as trumpeter Arve Henriksen, violinist Nils Økland, and drummer Per Oddvar Johansen. The music, while rooted in contemporary jazz, takes on a unique and intriguing approach, blending a chamber music-like aesthetic with experimental elements and ethnic melodies reminiscent of Nordic and Arabic traditional music. It’s a sound unlike much else, yet it fits perfectly within the ECM label’s signature style—perhaps a testament to producer Manfred Eicher’s magic. Highly recommended.
