An absolutely stunning album featuring the works of none other than Claude Debussy, the French composer who, alongside the likes of Erik Satie and Maurice Ravel at the turn of the 19th to 20th century, pioneered modern music and left a profound mark on generations to come. This set presents three piano sonatas composed between 1915 and 1916, towards the final chapter of Debussy’s life. Inspired by Igor Stravinsky’s 1911 ballet Petrushka, these pieces mark a departure from his earlier impressionistic style, reaching back to a classical sense of order while retaining an otherworldly beauty. Side A offers the Sonata for flute, viola, and harp; Side B opens with the Sonata for violin and piano, followed by the Sonata for cello and piano. Deeply lyrical works that feel all the more resonant to ears seasoned by New Age or ambient music—a must-hear for listeners attuned to both modern and timeless soundscapes. This copy comes as a direct import pressing from the time, complete with the original booklet and an insert featuring commentary by Japanese composer Minao Shibata.
