A 1969 release by Clifford Thornton, an American trumpeter who began with Ray Draper's group in the 1950s and later collaborated with avant-garde luminaries of the 1960s such as Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders, Marzette Watts, Dave Burrell, and Sunny Murray. This album marks Thornton's debut as a bandleader. Featuring participation from Grachan Moncur III, Archie Shepp, Arthur Jones, Dave Burrell, Beb Guerin, Sunny Murray, and Earl Freeman, the album captures recordings made in Paris, France in 1969. From the very start, the listener is drawn into a mysterious ethnic world with track A1, and then taken into the intense Afro-spiritual realm with tracks like the compelling A2, which features primal African chants. The album showcases a range that spans from Afro-spiritual elements to free-form improvisation, delivering a powerful and intense musical journey. Track B2, a deep zone created by a cornet and bass duo, is also highly impressive. Highly recommended.
