Featured in both the original and revised editions of the guidebook obscure sound, this 1982 release is the third and final album by Codona, the extraordinary trio of spiritually minded musicians Collin Walcott, Don Cherry, and Nana Vasconcelos. It represents one of the ultimate expressions of Fourth World jazz. Highlights include A1, a spiritual piece based on an arrangement of traditional Japanese music; A2, where the gentle tones of berimbau and kalimba blend beautifully with the interplay of the trio’s voices; and B2, a contemporary classical-inspired work constructed entirely from overdubbed vocals. Throughout the album, they create a singular sound and musical world that could never have been achieved by anyone other than these three musicians. The utterly trippy cosmic mandala music of B4 may well be Codona’s ultimate achievement, making it the perfect final piece of their career. Original German pressing.
