Released in 1978, this landmark debut is by Codona, a miraculous trio bringing together Collin Walcott, Don Cherry, and Nana Vasconcelos—three of the musicians most deeply associated with the ethnic and cross-cultural side of ECM. A1 and A2 establish a spiritual world strongly oriented toward Eastern traditions, while A3 transforms compositions by Ornette Coleman and Stevie Wonder through a richly multinational, folk-inflected approach. B1 is a wonderfully uplifting piece featuring Vasconcelos’ berimbau and vocals from all three members, while the cosmic B2 is utterly mesmerizing, as the distinctive timbres of their instruments resonate and merge. Although each musician’s individual character remains clearly defined, their sounds never clash, instead achieving a complete and effortless harmony.
