Despite suffering a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down, Masahiko Togashi—Japan’s legendary drummer and percussionist who continued performing by developing his own unique playing style—joins forces with Masahiko Satoh, one of Japan’s foremost pianists who has remained at the forefront of the scene since his 1969 debut Palladium, and bassist Keiki Midorikawa, a frequent collaborator of both musicians. Together they form the trio project Cosmic Pulsation Unity, whose album was released in 1975. Side A, titled “Sekiran” (Cumulonimbus), is a nearly 21-minute session in which fragmentary melodies born from free improvisation build up in layered formations, much like towering storm clouds. In sharp contrast, Side B’s “A-Un”unfolds within an atmosphere of profound stillness, sustained by extended passages of pianissimo, until a dramatic final swell arrives. The development is breathtakingly beautiful.
