Released in 1974, this album is by American saxophonist Dave Liebman, who first came to prominence as a member of Miles Davis’s electric funk-era band and went on to appear on numerous sessions while also producing many outstanding albums as a leader. It was his first release for ECM. The lineup features John Abercrombie on guitar, Jeff Williams on drums, Frank Tusa on bass, Richard Beirach on piano, Badal Roy on tabla, Steve Sattan on percussion, and Elena Sternberg on vocals. A1 begins with an organic interplay of acoustic guitar and flute before soaring into an uplifting samba rhythm. Its deeply ethnic atmosphere and flowing groove recall Chick Corea’s landmark Return to Forever. A2 is a jazz-rock tune driven by an explosive psychedelic guitar performance from John Abercrombie, while B1 occupies the entire second side with free-form experimental jazz featuring Badal Roy’s tabla.
Across its three extended pieces, the album brings together the funkiness inherited directly from Miles Davis and the organic sound characteristic of early ECM. An early classic. Japanese pressing released in 1980 as part of the ECM 10th Anniversary Collections series.
