Featured in the first edition of the guidebook Obscure Sound. This album documents The Historic US-Cuban Musical Exchange of 1977, a series of performances led by jazz composer and multi-instrumentalist David Amram, active since the 1950s, in tribute to the history of Afro-Cuban jazz. The lineup alone is extraordinary, featuring Alfredo de la Fé, Candido, Thad Jones, Pepper Adams, Paquito D’Rivera, and many others—and the performances are equally remarkable. A1 is an old-school Latin jazz piece dedicated to Dizzy Gillespie, while A2 pays tribute to the Cuban percussion group Los Papines. A3 captures a street performance recorded in Manhattan, and B1 is a live recording from Havana. Every track is an outstanding performance overflowing with Afro-Cuban spirit.
