Released in 1978, this masterpiece of a solo album is by British bassist Dave Holland, who has appeared on numerous ECM sessions and also left behind many outstanding recordings as a leader. Produced by Manfred Eicher, the album was recorded at Talent Studio in Oslo, where many classic ECM works were created. It consists entirely of solo double-bass performances, featuring Holland’s original compositions alongside pieces by Anthony Braxton and Miles Davis. Far removed from the kind of difficult solo performance centered primarily on technical display, Holland spins out deeply expressive and delicately melodic lines filled with a genuine sense of song. The rich tones of his double bass draw the listener into every subtle detail of this remarkable performance. US pressing.
