This 1986 leader album by American saxophonist David Murray—whose singular presence had stood out across countless sessions since the mid-’70s—features Baikida Carroll (tp), Craig Harris (tb), Steve Coleman (as, ss), Fred Hopkins (b), Billy Higgins (perc), and others, capturing live recordings from Sweet Basil in New York. Lawrence “Butch” Morris serves as conductor. Infused with the spirit of early jazz yet shaped by Murray’s distinctive avant-garde sensibility and the unique performances of the ensemble, the album delivers a swinging big-band sound. The final track is dedicated to Marvin Gaye.
