An album, released in 1985, by Dissidenten, an ethnic-electro band formed by Friedemann Josch, Uve Mullrich, and Marlon Klein, all of whom were members of the German jazz-rock group Embryo—a band deeply immersed in the classical music of the Middle East, Africa, and India, known for traveling extensively and recording remarkable collaborations with local musicians.

Recorded in Casablanca, Morocco and Paris, the album features not only Moroccan musicians but also former Embryo member Roman Bunka. It is filled throughout with ethno-beat richly infused with the flavor of raï, the North African dance music that flourished within Paris’s immigrant communities in the 1980s. The dance-oriented tracks are excellent, of course, but the floating, atmospheric development of B1 and the authentic Moroccan music showcased on B3 are also highly recommended.

B1: At The Pyramid
B3: Roots of Tanger
B4: Do The Pharaoo
