A 1983 release by South African–born pianist Dollar Brand (a.k.a. Abdullah Ibrahim), active since the 1960s and renowned for a wealth of Africa-themed masterworks. Quartet with close associate Carlos Ward (flute, alto sax), Essiet Okun Essiet (bass), and Don Mumford (drums). Highlights include A1, built on “Kramat,” a traditional folk song Brand sang as a child at festivals in his hometown of Cape Town; A3, evoking trains carrying Black laborers; B1, expressing an ancient African spiritual essence; and B3, dedicated to John Coltrane. Moving away from the overt social messaging of earlier works, this album radiates a deeply personal, positive energy rooted in African soul and passion. Superb throughout. Highly recommended for fans of Don Cherry. Original German pressing.

A1: Kramat
