This is an album by Dollar Brand a.k.a. Abdullah Ibrahim, a South African jazz pianist/composer who has been active since the 1960s and has left many masterpieces on African themes, released on ECM's sub-label Japo in 1974. Live recordings of a concert at the famous jazz club Jazz-hus Montmartre in Copenhaven, Denmark in 1972. Both sides are in medley form, and the nonstop unfolding of both sides is the quintessential Brand performance. The entire piece is a dramatic and emotionally charged solo acoustic piano performance with a minimalist refrain of phrases. You can also listen to Dollar Brand's flute on the B-side. This is a masterpiece of spiritual jazz with a return to Africa.
