South African jazz pianist and composer Dollar Brand, active since the 1960s and responsible for many masterpieces inspired by Africa, released this album in 1974 as a Japan Phonogram exclusive project. Highlights include a deeply emotional and highly personal interpretation of the classic “Caravan” on A1, the African folk-inspired suite on A2, B1 which opens with Brand’s own solo vocal, and B2 featuring a medley of three Ellington pieces. Throughout, Brand’s bright piano tone and sharply articulated melodic lines stand out vividly in the soundstage, making this an exceptionally fine recording. Recommended.
