This is a 1980 album by Dollar Brand, also known as Abdullah Ibrahim, a jazz pianist and composer hailing from South Africa, known for his numerous masterpieces with African themes since the 1960s. The album features a quintet with his close collaborators Carlos Ward (flute, alto sax), Craig Harris (trombone), Alonzo Gardner (bass), and Andre Strobert (drums), recorded during their performance at the 1980 Montreux Jazz Festival. The album includes renditions of six outstanding tracks, including A3 from the 1980 release 'African Marketplace.' Notably, the reimagined version of the Islamic-inspired masterpiece 'Ishmael' from the 1979 Dollar Brand Quartet album 'Africa-Tears and Laughter' is a highlight on B2. It's unquestionably a fantastic collection.
