This is the first installment in a series of live recordings from a concert held by American trumpeter Donald Ayler in Florence, Italy in 1981. Donald Ayler joined his older brother, saxophonist Albert Ayler's group in the mid-1960s, and participated in historic live performances such as "Bells" and "Spirits Rejoice". For this concert, he was accompanied by Abdul Rahim Mustafa (reeds), Anthony “Tony” Smith (piano), Richard “Radu” Williams (bass), Frank Doblekar (tenor saxophone), John Davis (guitar), and Jerry Griffin (percussion) as a septet. On the A-side, Ayler's performance showcases his self-expression within an orthodox bop style, reminiscent of the groove found in the music of Pharoah Sanders. On the B-side, while inheriting his older brother Albert's inclination towards creating free jazz through the integration of early jazz with chaotic improvisation, Ayler suggests a return to the roots of African music. Both sides delve into a spiritual realm that resonates with the style of John Coltrance and Pharoah Sanders. Highly recommended.
