In the 1960s, American pianist Don Pullen gained prominence in Giuseppi Logan's group and collaborated notably with Milford Graves. In addition to numerous sessions with Albert Ayler, Charles Mingus, George Adams, and others, he released an album in 1985. This album, recorded in New York in 1984 under the production of Masahiko Yuh, is a Japan-exclusive release featuring tracks showcasing Pullen's collaboration with various artists. As the title suggests, it pays homage to Thelonious Monk, considered one of the most influential jazz pianists of the 20th century. The album includes renditions of Monk's compositions, and Pullen also performs two original pieces dedicated to Monk, showcasing his exceptional musical prowess and unique approach.
