The debut album by Double Image, an unconventional quartet featuring David Friedman (vibraphone, marimba, percussion), who also appeared on the 1978 JAPO masterpiece Percussion Profiles; David Samuels (vibraphone, marimba, tabla, percussion), known for Skylight on ECM with Art Lande and Paul McCandless; Harvie Swartz (bass), who left behind excellent leader albums on Gramavision; and Michael DiPasqua (drums, percussion), a musician who contributed to numerous ECM recordings. Released in 1977, this outstanding album presents a highly refined performance in which the dual vibraphone and marimba interplay is joined by a rhythm section full of groove, with subtle ethnic flavors woven throughout. Highlights include A3, driven by superb solid drumming and bass work, and B1, where Samuels’ tabla resonates to striking effect. A superb album.
A3: Truce
B1: Rag-Out
