With rhythm sections from both Ellington’s and Coltrane’s sides assigned track by track, the album unfolds as an intimate session in which the two quietly feel out each other’s musical breathing. The opening “In A Sentimental Mood” is a sublime performance, with Coltrane’s tenor adding deep shades to Ellington’s delicate and elegant piano. Coltrane softens the contours of his phrases, carefully drawing out the emotions that lie within the melodies. Rather than flashiness, what lingers throughout the album is its sense of resonance and spacious interplay. Japanese pressing released by Nippon Columbia in 1976. Includes obi and insert.
