An album released in 1987 by guitarist Eduardo Fernández, a native of Montevideo, Uruguay, who studied under Abel Carlevaro and had been active on the front lines since the early 1970s. This is a solo guitar work devoted to compositions by Heitor Villa-Lobos, one of Brazil’s most important composers and a towering influence on countless Brazilian musicians, including Egberto Gismonti. The program includes the celebrated Prelude consisting of five short sections (A1), widely regarded as one of Villa-Lobos’s representative works; A2, considered one of the highest achievements of sonata form in the guitar repertoire; and B1, the set of 12 Études that focus on arpeggios, wide leaps, and glissandi. Together, these pieces unfold an emotional and beautiful sound world that powerfully conveys the depth of Villa-Lobos’s artistry—an aesthetic that can hardly be overstated as a root of Gismonti’s musical language. Fernández’s performance throughout is superb.

A2: Ginastera : Sonata - I Esordio: Solenne
B1: 12 Etudes : No. 11: Lent - Anime - Lent
