An album released in 1970 by the American composer Elliott Carter, who transitioned from Neoclassicism to twelve-tone techniques and established concepts such as rhythmic modulation and pitch-class set theory. It features compositions for string quartet written in 1951 and 1959. The performances are by The Composers Quartet, consisting of Matthew Raimondi (violin), Anahid Ajemian (violin), Jean Dupouy (viola), and Michael Rudiakov (cello).
Side A presents a two-part piece constructed with continuous development through the full range of the sound spectrum, highlighted by its Allegro Scorrevole. Side B offers variations of this and a nine-part composition. The album showcases a rich and profound string ensemble experience.
