Elton John
The Thom Bell Sessions
MCA Records (US) 1979
MCA-13921 (12”)
sleeve : EX-(collapse on one corner, slightly color-faded)
media : EX/EX(some slightly noise)
Released in 1979, this 12-inch single features three tracks recorded by Elton John, already one of the leading artists on the major music scene at the time, in collaboration with Thom Bell, the essential Philadelphia soul producer known for his work with The Delfonics, The Stylistics, The Spinners, MFSB, and many others. It is said that Elton chose Bell in order to incorporate the Philadelphia sound, which was highly popular in clubs at the time, into his own music. Members of The Spinners also appear in the backing band, resulting in an authentic Philly soul/disco sound throughout. While the major hit A1 “Mama Can’t Buy You Love” is certainly excellent, our strongest recommendation is B1 “Are You Ready For Love,” with its smooth groove carried by lush strings and chorus.
A1: Mama Can’t Buy You Love
B1: Are You Ready For Love
