German saxophonist Wolfgang Engstfeld—known for several fine collaborations on Mood Records—joins Belgian pianist Michel Herr and American drummer Leroy Lowe as the Engstfeld–Herr Quartet on this 1983 release for Nabel. Guest bassists Detlev Beier and Isla Eckinger appear on selected tracks. The album opens with A1, introduced by Herr’s deeply lyrical solo piano, while B1 unfolds over shifting waltz figures and interlocking rhythmic turns. Throughout, the group delivers richly scenic, powerful contemporary jazz of striking beauty—an overlooked gem from the European scene. Highly recommended for ECM listeners. Herr’s piano work, in particular, is outstanding.
A1: Short Stories
A4: New Horizon
