A 1983 outing from Italian trumpet master Enrico Rava—known for his superb work on ECM and JAPO—issued on the esteemed Italian jazz label Soul Note. The quintet pairs leading Italian players Pietro Tonolo (ts), Franco D’Andrea (p), and Giovanni Tommaso (b) with American drummer Bruce Ditmas, noted for sessions with Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny as well as the cult oddity Aeray Dust. Alongside Rava originals, the set touches on a Gershwin standard and a Nino Rota theme. While much of the program leans toward a relatively orthodox modern jazz feel, the true highlights are B2/B3: deeply spiritual pieces where Rava’s trumpet—reminiscent of Don Cherry—glows with haunting, inner-lit intensity.
